Stainless Steel Coil Tube — Simplified Optimization Design for Heat Exchangers

Product Code: 1557  |  Manufacturer: Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd.  |  Classification: Literature Study / Engineering Design Reference

1. Product Overview

The stainless steel coil tube (盘管) is a helically wound tubular component engineered for use in heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, and process piping systems. This technical document is derived from the study and analysis of the paper "Simplified Optimization Design Method for Coil Heat Exchangers" (《盘管换热器的简捷优化设计法》), which presents a streamlined methodology for the thermodynamic and geometric optimization of coil-type heat exchange surfaces.

Coil tubes offer a significant advantage over straight-tube configurations in terms of surface-to-volume ratio, compactness, and enhanced heat transfer coefficients due to the secondary flow (Dean flow) induced by the helical curvature. The simplified optimization design method described in the referenced literature enables engineers to rapidly determine optimal coil geometry parameters — including coil diameter, tube diameter, pitch, number of turns, and flow velocity — while satisfying thermal performance targets, pressure drop constraints, and economic criteria.

Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. leverages this optimization framework in the design and supply of stainless steel coil tubes, ensuring that each product delivered meets rigorous performance benchmarks validated through both analytical modeling and experimental verification.

3.3 Applicable Standards & Specifications

4. Manufacturing Process

4.1 Raw Material Preparation

Manufacturing begins with the selection of certified seamless stainless steel tubes conforming to ASTM A269 or A213 specifications. Each incoming batch undergoes spectroscopic analysis (OES) to verify chemical composition, tensile testing per ASTM A370, and hydrostatic pressure testing. Material traceability is maintained through heat number documentation throughout the production chain.

4.2 Coil Winding Process

  1. Tube Straightening & Annealing: Incoming tubes are cold-straightened and solution-annealed at 1,050–1,150 °C followed by rapid quenching to restore full austenitic structure and relieve residual stresses.
  2. End Preparation: Tube ends are cut square, deburred, and dressed to ensure proper fitment compatibility and welding integrity.
  3. Helical Winding: Tubes are wound onto precision-machined mandrels using CNC-controlled coil winding machines. The winding parameters — coil diameter, pitch, and turn count — are set according to the optimization design outputs (Section 3.1). Tension control systems maintain uniform winding without inducing ovality or residual deformation.
  4. Welding (if applicable): For multi-turn coil assemblies, butt welds or orbital TIG welds are performed at coil terminations. Weld quality is verified by visual inspection (VT), dye penetrant testing (PT), or radiographic testing (RT) per ASME Section V.
  5. Post-Wind Annealing & Stress Relief: Wound coils are subjected to a controlled annealing cycle (1,000–1,100 °C, 30–60 min, air or protective atmosphere) to eliminate winding-induced residual stresses and restore mechanical properties.

4.3 Surface Treatment & Finishing

  1. Pickling: Immersion in a mixed acid bath (HNO₃ + HF or HNO₃ + H₃PO₄) to remove oxide scale and discoloration.
  2. Passivation: Treatment with 20–30% nitric acid solution to restore the chromium oxide passive layer, ensuring optimal corrosion resistance.
  3. Electropolishing (if specified): Electrochemical polishing in a sulfuric-phosphoric acid electrolyte to achieve Ra ≤ 0.2 μm surface roughness, with a minimum 2 μm wall thickness removal to eliminate surface contamination.
  4. Cleaning & Drying: Final rinse with deionized water (≤ 5 μS/cm conductivity), followed by compressed nitrogen drying and protective end-capping.
