Stainless Steel Spiral Coil Tube — Nuclear Steam Generator Grade

Product Overview

The Spiral Coil Tube is a precision-engineered stainless steel tube product specifically designed for high-temperature, high-pressure environments, with primary application in High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) steam generator systems. This product is manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd and is engineered to meet the stringent requirements of nuclear-grade heat exchanger assemblies, where vibration resistance, thermal stability, and long-term structural integrity are paramount.

The spiral coil tube geometry provides an optimal balance between heat transfer surface area and pressure drop, making it particularly suitable for the steam generator spiral coil assemblies used in the HTR-10 (High Temperature Reactor-10) and related advanced nuclear energy systems. The product has been validated through comprehensive Vibration and Stability Analysis (V&SA) to ensure reliable performance under dynamic operational conditions.

Material & Properties

The spiral coil tubes are fabricated from high-performance austenitic stainless steels, selected for their exceptional resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and stress-induced degradation under extreme thermal and mechanical loading.

Manufacturing Process

The production of nuclear-grade spiral coil tubes involves a multi-stage, tightly controlled manufacturing sequence:

  1. Material Procurement & Verification: Raw stainless steel bars or seamless tubes are sourced from certified mills with full mill test certificates (MTC) traceable to heat numbers. Incoming material undergoes spectrographic analysis (PMI), mechanical testing, and non-destructive examination (NDE) including ultrasonic testing (UT) and magnetic particle inspection (MPI).
  2. Seamless Tube Forming: Tubes are produced via hot-rolling, cold-drawing, or cold-drawing and cold-rolling (CD&CR) processes to achieve precise dimensional tolerances (±0.05 mm on OD).
  3. Spiral Coiling / Helical Forming: Using CNC-controlled coiling machinery with precision dies, the straight tube is formed into a helical/spiral geometry. The coiling process is performed under controlled temperature and speed parameters to prevent work hardening, residual stress accumulation, and geometric distortion.
  4. Heat Treatment: Solution annealing at 1040°C – 1150°C followed by controlled air cooling or water quenching to restore full austenitic microstructure, eliminate residual stresses, and ensure maximum corrosion resistance.
  5. Pickling & Passivation: The formed coil tube is subjected to acid pickling (HNO₃/HF mixture) to remove scale and oxide layers, followed by passivation treatment to form a protective chromium oxide film.
  6. Dimensional Inspection: Post-forming dimensional verification using laser scanning, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and optical profilometry to confirm coil pitch, helical diameter, and tube cross-sectional geometry.
  7. Non-Destructive Examination (NDE): Comprehensive NDE including eddy current testing (ECT), ultrasonic testing (UT), and radiographic testing (RT) to detect internal and surface defects. Hydrostatic pressure testing is performed at 1.5× the design pressure for a minimum dwell time of 30 minutes.
  8. Vibration & Stability Analysis (V&SA): Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimental modal testing are conducted to evaluate the dynamic response characteristics of the spiral coil tube assembly, ensuring natural frequencies are sufficiently separated from operational excitation frequencies (pumping, flow-induced vibration, and seismic loads).
