Reformer Coil Tube (Primary Conversion Furnace Coiltube)

Product Overview

The Reformer Coil Tube (also referred to as a primary conversion furnace coil tube or steam reformer coil) is a critical heat-exchange component employed in the upstream section of natural gas steam reforming processes. These coil tubes are fabricated from high-temperature austenitic stainless steel alloys and are designed to withstand extreme thermal environments, high-pressure hydrogen-containing atmospheres, and aggressive chemical conditions. The product is supplied in coiled form to facilitate installation within the radiant zone of a primary reformer furnace, where the endothermic reaction of hydrocarbon conversion to synthesis gas (syngas) takes place.

This product line draws upon extensive operational experience in diagnosing and mitigating common failure modes of reformer coil tubes, including carburization, intergranular corrosion, oxidation scaling, creep rupture, and thermal fatigue cracking. The design philosophy emphasizes extended service life, thermal stability, and resistance to the complex degradation mechanisms encountered during continuous high-temperature operation.

Material & Properties

Reformer coil tubes are predominantly manufactured from specialized high-temperature austenitic stainless steel grades engineered for exceptional oxidation resistance, carburization resistance, and hot strength at elevated service temperatures (typically 700–1100 °C).

Manufacturing Process

The production of reformer coil tubes follows a rigorous multi-stage manufacturing process to ensure dimensional accuracy, metallurgical integrity, and resistance to the demanding service conditions of primary reformer furnaces.

  1. Raw Material Selection & Inspection: High-purity molten steel is produced via vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electron beam melting (EBM) to minimize impurities (S, P, N) and ensure homogeneous microstructure. Incoming material is verified by certificate of analysis (COA) and spectroscopic analysis.
  2. Hollowing & Piercing: Billet material is heated to forging temperature and pierced to produce seamless tube blanks. The piercing process is controlled to avoid internal defects and ensure uniform wall thickness.
  3. Hot Rolling / Cold Drawing: Tubes are hot-rolled to near-final dimensions and subsequently cold-drawn or cold-rolled to achieve precise outer diameter and wall thickness tolerances. This process also imparts beneficial grain refinement and improved mechanical properties.
  4. Heat Treatment (Solution Annealing): Tubes are solution-annealed at 1050–1150 °C followed by rapid quenching to achieve a fully austenitic microstructure, dissolve carbides, and maximize corrosion and carburization resistance.
  5. Pickling & Passivation: Surface oxide scales are removed via acid pickling (typically hydrofluoric/nitric acid blend), followed by passivation treatment to form a protective chromium oxide film. This ensures a clean, corrosion-resistant surface.
  6. Coiling / Bending: Tubes are carefully coiled to the required diameter using hydraulic coiling equipment. Bending operations are controlled to prevent localized work hardening, cracking, or distortion.
  7. Quality Inspection & Testing:
    • Visual inspection for surface defects
    • Dimensional measurement (OD, WT, straightness, coil diameter)
    • Hydrostatic pressure testing per ASTM A213
    • Eddy current testing for surface and near-surface defects
    • Ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal discontinuities
    • Chemical composition verification via optical emission spectrometry (OES)
    • Mechanical testing (tensile, hardness) per applicable standards
    • Intergranular corrosion testing (ASTM A262 Practice E) for stabilized grades
  8. Packaging & Dispatch: Tubes are packaged with protective end caps, wrapped in moisture-proof material, and secured for transport. Full documentation including mill test certificates (MTC), material traceability records, and dimensional inspection reports accompany each shipment.

Applications

Reformer coil tubes are indispensable components in the following industrial processes:

Failure Analysis & Countermeasures

Based on extensive operational experience and post-failure analysis of primary reformer coil tubes, the following common failure mechanisms and corresponding countermeasures are documented:

Failure Mode Root Cause Countermeasure
Carburization & Grain Boundary Cracking Carbon diffusion into tube walls in reducing (hydrogen-rich) atmospheres, leading to brittle carbide networks at grain boundaries Use of niobium/titanium-stabilized grades (HP-N, 347H); strict control of carbon content (<0.04%); proper solution annealing treatment
Oxidation Scaling Formation of thick, spalling oxide scales due to localized hot spots or oxygen ingress Selection of high-Cr alloys (25%+ Cr); maintenance of reducing furnace atmosphere; avoidance of tube surface overheating
Creep Rupture Time-dependent plastic deformation under sustained high-temperature stress Proper wall thickness design; use of creep-resistant alloy grades; periodic ultrasonic wall thickness monitoring
Thermal Fatigue Cracking Crack initiation and propagation due to repeated thermal cycling during start-up and shutdown Controlled ramp-up/ramp-down procedures; use of thermal fatigue-resistant alloy grades; avoidance of sharp bends
Intergranular Corrosion (IGC) Chromium depletion at grain boundaries due to carbide precipitation during improper heat treatment Stabilized alloy grades; proper solution annealing; intergranular corrosion testing (ASTM A262)
Scaling & Plugging Internal deposit buildup from feed gas impurities (sulfur compounds, siloxanes) Upstream feed gas purification; regular tube cleaning; selection of sulfur-tolerant alloy grades
