Manufacturing Process
1. Raw Material Selection and Inspection
High-purity stainless steel strip is procured from certified mills, undergoing rigorous incoming inspection including chemical composition verification (via Optical Emission Spectrometry, OES), mechanical property testing, and visual surface examination. Only strips meeting or exceeding specification requirements proceed to the forming stage.
2. Cold Roll Forming
The flat stainless steel strip is fed through a series of precision roller stations that progressively form the strip into a tubular cross-section. This cold-forming process ensures tight dimensional tolerances without the need for subsequent welding in seamless configurations. The forming rollers are CNC-machined with micron-level precision to guarantee consistent OD and wall thickness throughout the coil length.
3. Welding (Where Applicable)
For welded coil tube configurations, the formed strip is joined using High-Frequency Resistance Welding (HFRW) or Laser Welding technology. The welding parameters are continuously monitored and controlled to ensure a hermetic, defect-free weld seam with mechanical properties equivalent to the base metal.
4. Solution Annealing and Pickling
The formed tube is subjected to solution annealing at temperatures between 1010°C and 1150°C, followed by rapid water quenching. This process dissolves carbides, restores full austenitic structure, and eliminates residual stresses from cold forming. Subsequent pickling and passivation remove surface oxides and contaminants, establishing a stable chromium oxide passive layer.
5. Precision Dimensional Correction
The annealed coil tube passes through precision sizing rollers and mandrel-drawing stations to achieve final dimensional accuracy. This stage ensures compliance with specified OD and wall thickness tolerances, including tight-tolerance requirements for precision applications.
6. Surface Finishing
Depending on the required surface specification, the coil tube undergoes additional finishing operations including:
- Mechanical Polishing: Multi-stage belt or brush polishing for mirror finish
- Electrolytic Polishing: For ultra-smooth surfaces with Ra ≤ 0.1 μm
- Acid Etching: For matte or satin surface textures
7. Final Inspection and Coiling
Each coil undergoes comprehensive final inspection including:
- Dimensional verification (OD, wall thickness, straightness)
- Surface quality examination (visual and automated optical inspection)
- Hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing
- Chemical composition re-verification (spot sampling)
- Corrosion resistance testing (salt spray testing per ASTM B117)
After passing all quality checks, the coil tube is wound onto precision steel cores with protective interlayers to prevent surface damage during storage and transportation.
