Stainless Steel Heating Furnace Coil Tube (Coiltube) — Technical Specification

1. Product Overview

Stainless Steel Heating Furnace Coil Tubes (also referred to as Coiltube or Furnace Coil Tubing) are precision-engineered tubular components manufactured from austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades, designed for continuous use in high-temperature industrial heating furnaces, annealing lines, and heat treatment systems. These coil tubes are fabricated into serpentine or U-bend configurations to maximize heat transfer surface area within confined furnace volumes while maintaining structural integrity under sustained thermal cycling.

This specification addresses the critical quality control parameters associated with coil tube manufacturing, with particular emphasis on the prevention and control of incomplete weld penetration (lack of fusion) defects in butt-welded and orbital-welded joints — a paramount concern in furnace coil tube assemblies where weld integrity directly governs service life and safety.

4. Manufacturing Process

4.1 Production Flow

  1. Raw Material Inspection: Incoming stainless steel coil or seamless pipe undergoes chemical composition verification (spectroscopic analysis) and mechanical property testing per ASTM A213.
  2. Coiling & Straightening: The tube stock is fed through a cold coiling/bending machine (induction-assisted or mechanical rotary draw bending) to form the required serpentine or U-bend geometry. Minimum bend radius is maintained at 3D to prevent ovality exceeding 5%.
  3. Segment Cutting: Tubes are cut to required segment lengths using abrasive saws or laser cutting, with end faces prepared to ± 0.05 mm perpendicularity.
  4. Orbital TIG Welding (GTAW): Butt joints are welded using automated orbital gas tungsten arc welding with internal helium (He) or argon (Ar) purge to prevent oxidation of the root bead. This is the critical process step for ensuring full weld penetration.
  5. Heat Treatment (Solution Annealing): Welded assemblies are solution annealed at 1050–1100 °C followed by rapid water quench to restore full austenitic microstructure and eliminate sensitization.
  6. Pickling & Passivation: Post-weld discoloration is removed via acid pickling (HNO₃/HF blend) and passivation to restore chromium oxide protective layer.
  7. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): All welds are subject to 100% visual inspection (VT) and radiographic testing (RT) or ultrasonic testing (UT) per ASME BPV Section V.
  8. Final Dimensional & Pressure Testing: Hydrostatic pressure test at 1.5× working pressure, minimum hold time 30 seconds.

4.2 Critical Control: Prevention of Incomplete Weld Penetration (Lack of Fusion)

Incomplete Weld Penetration (also termed Lack of Fusion or Incomplete Penetration) is one of the most detrimental defects in furnace coil tube welds. It manifests as a discontinuity at the root of the weld joint where molten metal fails to fully fuse with the base metal or with a previously deposited weld layer. In the context of heating furnace coil tubes, this defect is particularly hazardous because:

  • Thermal cycling creates cyclic stresses at the weld toe, initiating fatigue cracks at unfused regions.
  • Reduced effective cross-section leads to localized overheating and accelerated oxidation.
  • Undetected lack of fusion can result in catastrophic tube rupture under operating pressure.

4.3 Root Cause Analysis & Control Measures

Cause Category Specific Factor Control Measure
Process Parameters Insufficient welding current WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) qualification per ASME IX; current set at ≥ 1.5× minimum qualified value
Excessive travel speed Automated orbital system with speed interlock; travel speed ≤ 25 mm/min for wall ≤ 3 mm
Inadequate arc length Non-contact pilot arc system with arc length feedback control (± 0.2 mm tolerance)
Joint Preparation Insufficient root gap Root gap maintained at 0.5–1.5 mm (for wall ≤ 4 mm); verified by go/no-go gauge
Poor bevel fit-up Angular misalignment ≤ 1°; root face alignment verified by straightedge
Environmental Inadequate shielding gas purge Internal He/Ar purge flow ≥ 5 L/min; oxygen meter monitoring ≤ 500 ppm at exit
Contamination (oil, rust, oxide) Pre-weld cleaning: solvent degreasing + mechanical grinding to bare metal
Material High carbon content (sensitization) Specify low-carbon grades (310S, C ≤ 0.08%) to reduce grain boundary carbide precipitation
Weld wire/base metal mismatch Filler wire grade must match or exceed base metal per AWS A5.9 (ER310)
