Stainless Steel Floating Coil Tube for Crude Oil Tank Heating Systems
Product Overview
The Stainless Steel Floating Coil Tube (Coiltube) is a precision-engineered heat exchange component designed specifically for immersion heating applications in crude oil storage and processing environments. Manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd., this product series is deployed as a floating coil tube heater within single-well crude oil tanks, where it circulates hot heat-transfer media (typically thermal oil or steam) to maintain optimal viscosity and flow characteristics of heavy crude oil prior to transport or refining.
The floating coil tube design offers significant energy-saving advantages over conventional bottom-mounted or side-mounted heating systems. By floating on the oil surface, the coil tube achieves maximum thermal contact area with the crude oil, minimizing heat loss to the tank walls and reducing overall energy consumption. This configuration has been validated through rigorous energy-benefit analysis studies demonstrating measurable reductions in fuel consumption and operational costs in upstream petroleum production.

Manufacturing Process
Step 1: Raw Material Selection and Inspection
Virgin stainless steel seamless tubes conforming to ASTM A269 (welded and seamless austenitic stainless steel tubing) or ASTM A312 (seamless austenitic stainless steel tubing and pipe) are sourced from certified mills. Each heat lot undergoes spectrographic analysis (PMI verification), mechanical testing, and hydrostatic pressure testing prior to acceptance.
Step 2: Annealing and Solution Treatment
Tubes are solution-annealed at 1,040–1,120°C followed by rapid quenching to achieve a fully austenitic microstructure, ensuring maximum corrosion resistance, ductility, and non-magnetic properties. Post-annealing mechanical properties are verified through tensile testing and hardness measurement.
Step 3: Coil Forming
Precision CNC coil-forming equipment bends the straight tube into the specified helical geometry. Critical parameters—mean coil diameter, pitch, and number of turns—are controlled to within ±1% tolerance. The forming process employs controlled bending radii (minimum bend radius ≥ 3× OD) to prevent wall thinning, ovality, or buckling. Post-forming dimensional verification is performed using laser scanning or coordinate measurement systems.
Step 4: Welding (if multi-pass construction)
For coil tubes requiring multiple tube sections joined together, GTAW (Gas Tungen Arc Welding) or Orbital TIG welding is employed using matching filler metals (e.g., ER308L for 304L, ER316L for 316L). Weld procedures are qualified per ASME Section IX or ISO 15614. All welds undergo 100% visual inspection and, where specified, radiographic testing (RT) or dye penetrant testing (PT) in accordance with ASME BPV Code Section V.
Step 5: Surface Treatment
Internal surfaces may be electropolished to achieve Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, reducing fouling and scaling tendencies during long-term thermal oil service. External surfaces receive appropriate finishing per customer specification. All treated surfaces are passivated per ASTM A967 to remove free iron contamination and restore maximum corrosion resistance.
Step 6: Hydrostatic Pressure Testing
Each completed coil tube assembly is hydrostatically pressure-tested at 1.5× the maximum design operating pressure for a minimum dwell time of 2 minutes. Zero leakage is required for acceptance. Test records are documented and made available to the end customer.
Step 7: Assembly and Integration
The coil tube is integrated with its floating support frame (fabricated from matching stainless steel grade), inlet/outlet headers, and any required instrumentation ports. The complete floating coil tube heater assembly is subjected to final dimensional inspection and functional verification prior to packaging and shipment.
Applications
Primary Application: Crude Oil Single-Well Tank Heating
The floating coil tube heater is specifically engineered for immersion in single-well crude oil storage tanks at upstream production facilities. Heavy crude oil, particularly those with high API gravity (low API number, typically 15–30°API), requires continuous thermal management to maintain fluidity for gravity flow to pipelines or processing units. The floating coil tube design provides uniform, surface-level heat distribution that prevents localized overheating, coking, and thermal degradation of crude oil.
Additional Applications
- Bitumen and Heavy Oil Storage: Maintaining pumpable viscosity for asphalt-grade crudes requiring sustained temperatures of 50–90°C
- Condensate and Naphtha Tanks: Low-temperature trace heating to prevent hydrate formation and paraffin deposition
- Chemical Processing: Immersion heating of viscous chemical intermediates in stainless steel process vessels
- Food and Pharmaceutical: Immersion heating of liquid products in sanitary-grade stainless steel tanks (316L electropolished)
- Marine and Offshore: Fuel oil heating systems on vessels where space constraints favor compact floating coil designs
- Wastewater Treatment: Digestion tank heating for anaerobic biogas production processes
Energy-Saving Performance
Based on engineering analysis of floating coil tube heater installations in single-well crude oil tanks, the following energy-saving benefits have been documented:
- 20–35% reduction in thermal energy consumption compared to conventional bottom-mounted tubular heaters
- Elimination of heat loss through tank bottom and tank walls, as the coil tube is thermally coupled only to the oil surface
- Reduced thermal cycling of tank structure, extending tank service life
- Lower parasitic heat losses to atmosphere via tank roof
- Improved heat transfer coefficient due to natural convection patterns at the oil surface interface
