Manufacturing Process
Step 1: Raw Material Selection & Verification
High-purity stainless steel coil stock is sourced from certified mills with full chemical composition verification via Spectroscopic Analysis (Optical Emission Spectrometry, OES) and Positive Material Identification (PMI). Each batch is accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) conforming to EN 10204 Type 3.1.
Step 2: Coil Forming / Bending
The stainless steel tube is cold-formed into the required coil geometry using precision CNC mandrel bending machines. The bending process maintains a minimum bend radius of 3D (3× outer diameter) to prevent ovality exceeding 5% and to avoid microstructural damage to the tube wall. Multi-point hydraulic bending ensures dimensional accuracy within ±0.5 mm tolerance.
Step 3: Welding & Joining
Orbital TIG welding (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, GTAW) is employed for all circumferential and longitudinal welds. The process utilizes argon shielding gas with internal purge to prevent oxidation of the weld root. Weld parameters are controlled per qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) conforming to ASME Section IX. Laser welding is available for thin-wall applications requiring minimal Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ).
Step 4: Heat Treatment & Solution Annealing
Post-weld solution annealing is performed at 1050–1150°C followed by rapid water quenching to dissolve precipitated chromium carbides, restoring full corrosion resistance to the weld and HAZ regions. This step is critical for preventing intergranular corrosion (IGC) in sensitized areas.
Step 5: Surface Treatment — Pickling & Passivation
The coil tube undergoes acid pickling (HNO₃ + HF mixture) to remove oxide scale and weld discoloration, followed by passivation treatment to establish a stable chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) passive film. Electropolishing is available for critical applications requiring Ra ≤ 0.4 μm surface finish, such as pharmaceutical and food-grade reactor systems.
Step 6: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
- 100% Helium Leak Testing: All weld joints and coil assemblies are tested for leakage at pressures up to 10⁻⁶ mbar·L/s leak rate.
- Radiographic Testing (RT): 100% penetration weld inspection per ASME BPVC Section V Article 2.
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Wall thickness verification and internal defect detection.
- Dye Penetrant Testing (PT): Surface-breaking defect detection on accessible welds.
- Eddy Current Testing (ECT): Continuous in-line inspection for coil stock during forming.
Step 7: Final Assembly & Quality Assurance
Completed coil tube assemblies undergo dimensional verification, pressure testing (hydrostatic test at 1.5× design pressure), and final visual inspection. Each unit is tagged with a unique serial number traceable to material batch, welding parameters, and test results.
Applications
Primary Application: External Coil Tube Reactor Systems
The coil tube is the defining heat exchange component of the External Coil Type Reactor, where the stainless steel coil is wrapped around the exterior of a reactor vessel to provide precise thermal control. This configuration offers superior heat transfer efficiency compared to traditional jacketed reactors, particularly for viscous fluids and reactions requiring rapid temperature changes.
Industries & Use Cases
- Chemical Processing: Polymerization reactions, hydrolysis, esterification, and other exothermic/endothermic chemical reactions requiring precise temperature control in reactor vessels.
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: GMP-compliant reactors for drug synthesis, crystallization, and fermentation processes where corrosion resistance and surface cleanliness are paramount.
- Petrochemical Industry: Catalytic cracking, hydrogenation, and reforming reactor auxiliary cooling/heating systems.
- Food & Beverage Processing: Pasteurization, sterilization, and controlled heating in food-grade reactors (316L, electropolished).
- Biotechnology: Bioreactor thermal management systems requiring biocompatible, corrosion-resistant coil assemblies.
- Environmental Engineering: Wastewater treatment reactor systems exposed to aggressive chemical environments.
Corrosion & Leakage Prevention Considerations
Critical Design Principle: External coil tube reactor systems are highly susceptible to corrosion-induced leakage due to the combined effects of thermal cycling, chemical exposure, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Wenzhou Jixing's coil tube products are engineered with specific countermeasures:
- Material Selection Optimization: Grade selection based on specific chemical media compatibility, with chloride resistance prioritized for coastal or chlorinated environments (316L minimum; 904L or 254 SMO for high-chloride service).
- Stress-Relieved Welds: Post-weld annealing eliminates residual stresses that contribute to SCC initiation, particularly in the sensitized HAZ.
- Full Passivation: Ensures maximum passive film integrity across all exposed surfaces, including welds and bends.
- Geometric Design Optimization: Minimum bend radius and consistent coil pitch prevent stress concentration points that could initiate fatigue cracking under thermal cycling.
- Leak Detection Compatibility: Coil tube design accommodates integration with external leak detection systems and pressure monitoring instrumentation.
