Stainless Steel Helical Coil Tube — Heat Transfer Enhanced Spiral Coiltube

Product Code: JX-ST-384  |  Manufacturer: Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd.

Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Helical Coil Tube (Coiltube) is a precision-engineered tubular product designed for high-efficiency heat transfer applications where secondary flow vortex dynamics play a critical role in enhancing convective heat exchange. Manufactured from high-grade austenitic stainless steel, this coiltube is formed into a continuous helical geometry that induces Dean-type secondary flow vortices within the tube bore. These vortices disrupt the thermal boundary layer, significantly increasing the Nusselt number (Nu) and overall heat transfer coefficient compared to straight-tube configurations.

The product draws upon advanced research findings regarding the influence of secondary flow vortices on internal heat transfer characteristics in helical coil tubes, incorporating insights from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental validation to optimize the helical pitch, curvature ratio (D/d), and Reynolds number (Re) operating ranges for maximum thermal performance.

Thermal Performance Enhancement

Due to the helical geometry, the coiltube generates Dean vortices that enhance turbulent mixing and reduce the thermal boundary layer thickness. Research indicates that the Nusselt number for helical coil tubes can be 1.5 to 3.0 times that of equivalent straight tubes at the same Reynolds number. The curvature ratio (D/d, where D is the coil mean diameter and d is the tube outer diameter) is a critical parameter governing the intensity of secondary flow patterns.

Manufacturing Process

  1. Raw Material Inspection: Incoming stainless steel seamless or welded tube stock is verified for chemical composition (via optical emission spectrometry, OES), mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy per ASTM A213/A269 or EN 10216 standards.
  2. Pre-Treatment and Cleaning: Tubes undergo degreasing, pickling, and passivation to remove surface contaminants and restore the chromium oxide passive layer essential for corrosion resistance.
  3. Helical Coiling Forming: Precision CNC-controlled coiling machines wind the straight tube into the specified helical geometry. The coiling speed, die configuration, and tension parameters are carefully controlled to prevent ovality, wrinkling, or excessive work hardening. The curvature ratio (D/d) is maintained within tolerance to ensure consistent Dean vortex formation.
  4. Stress Relief Annealing: Post-coiling annealing at 1050°C – 1150°C followed by controlled cooling eliminates residual stresses introduced during forming, restoring full ductility and ensuring dimensional stability.
  5. Pickling and Passivation: The annealed coil is treated in a mixed acid solution (HNO₃/HF) to dissolve oxide scale, followed by a passivation step to re-establish a protective chromium oxide film.
  6. Hydrostatic Pressure Testing: Each coil is subjected to hydrostatic testing at 1.5 times the maximum design pressure to verify weld integrity and structural soundness.
  7. Final Inspection and Dimensional Verification: Coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and laser scanning verify coil geometry, pitch accuracy, and tube profile. Surface roughness is measured per ASTM B567.
  8. Packaging and Shipping: Coils are wrapped in moisture-proof protective film, placed on wooden pallets, and secured for transit to prevent mechanical damage.
