Spiral Coil Tube Bundle for Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) Coolant Systems

Product Overview

The Spiral Coil Tube Bundle (Coiltube) is a specialized heat transfer component engineered for advanced nuclear reactor systems and high-temperature industrial applications operating with Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) as the primary coolant medium. This product represents a state-of-the-art solution in compact heat exchanger design, leveraging spiral coil geometry to maximize heat transfer efficiency within constrained spatial envelopes. The coil tube bundle is designed to withstand extreme thermal cycling, high-pressure environments, and the aggressive chemical nature of molten LBE alloy, making it suitable for Generation IV reactor concepts including Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactors (SCFR) and Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors (LFR).

Based on rigorous three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D-CFD) numerical simulation methodologies, the spiral coil tube bundle geometry has been optimized to achieve superior flow distribution, enhanced turbulence intensity, and reduced flow-induced vibration (FIV) compared to conventional straight-tube heat exchangers. The design incorporates helical winding patterns that promote secondary Dean vortices, significantly augmenting the convective heat transfer coefficient while maintaining acceptable pressure drop characteristics.

Manufacturing Process

The production of the spiral coil tube bundle follows a precisely controlled multi-stage manufacturing workflow, adhering to international nuclear-grade quality standards:

  1. Material Selection & Incoming Inspection: Raw stainless steel seamless tubes are sourced from certified mills and subjected to chemical composition analysis (ASTM E415), mechanical testing (ASTM A370), and ultrasonic flaw detection (ASTM E309) prior to processing.
  2. Pipe Preparation: Tubes are cut to required lengths, end-prepared with beveling (37° ± 2°), and cleaned using solvency degreasing followed by pickling and passivation to remove mill scale and contaminants.
  3. Coil Winding: Precision CNC-controlled winding machines form the helical geometry with programmable pitch, diameter, and winding angle. The winding process is conducted under inert atmosphere (Argon) to prevent oxidation and ensure dimensional accuracy.
  4. Heat Treatment: Solution annealing at 1050–1100°C followed by controlled cooling to restore the austenitic microstructure, relieve residual stresses from cold winding, and achieve maximum corrosion resistance. Stress-relief annealing at 350–450°C may be applied for specific applications.
  5. Bundle Assembly: Individual coils are assembled into bundles using precision-fabricated support plates, spacers, and end plates. Assembly is performed in a clean-room environment to minimize particulate contamination.
  6. Welding: All weld joints are fabricated using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding or Orbital welding with 100% Argon shielding. Weld procedures are qualified per ASME Section IX and AWS D16.9 (welding of stainless steel).
  7. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Comprehensive inspection includes 100% visual examination (VT), ultrasonic testing (UT) per ASTM E309, dye penetrant testing (PT) per ASTM E165, and radiographic testing (RT) per ASTM E94 for critical welds.
  8. Hydrostatic/Pneumatic Pressure Testing: Each coil tube bundle is pressure-tested at 1.5× design pressure for a minimum hold time of 30 minutes with zero leakage tolerance.
  9. Final Cleaning & Packaging: Final electropolishing, acid pickling, and passivation treatment followed by vacuum packaging with desiccant to prevent oxidation during storage and transport.
