Stainless Steel Coil Tube — Insulation Layer Material Selection & Waterproofing Specification

1. Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Coil Tube (Coiltube) manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. is a continuous-length tubular product designed for high-performance piping systems in demanding industrial environments. This specification focuses on the critical ancillary engineering requirement of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) mitigation — widely recognized as the primary failure mechanism for stainless steel piping systems exposed to chloride-rich environments.

CUI occurs when moisture and aggressive ions, particularly chloride ions (Cl⁻), penetrate the insulation layer and accumulate at the metal–insulation interface, initiating localized pitting and crevice corrosion. For austenitic stainless steel grades (e.g., 304, 316, 321), CUI is the number one cause of premature pipe failure in petrochemical, power generation, and offshore applications. This specification defines the mandatory insulation and jacketing requirements to ensure long-term integrity of the coil tube system.

2. Material & Properties

2.1 Insulation Material Requirements

The insulation material must comply with stringent purity standards to prevent chloride-induced corrosion at the pipe surface. The governing requirement is:

2.2 Outer Jacketing (Weatherproofing) Materials

The insulation layer must be enveloped by a continuous, impermeable outer jacket to prevent atmospheric moisture ingress. Two primary jacketing options are specified:

4. Manufacturing Process

  1. Insulation Material Selection & Incoming Inspection: All insulation batches must be certified for Cl⁻ < 50 ppm. Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is mandatory per shipment. Materials failing chloride testing are rejected outright.
  2. Insulation Installation: Insulation blocks or boards are fitted around the coil tube with minimal air gaps. All joints are staggered (not aligned) to prevent moisture tracking. The insulation must conform to the tube curvature without compression below 95% of nominal density.
  3. Weatherproof Jacketing Application: The aluminum or stainless steel skin is wrapped over the insulation with a minimum 25 mm lap overlap. All longitudinal and circumferential seams are sealed with self-adhesive aluminum foil tape or butyl-based mastic sealant.
  4. Penetration & Flange Sealing: All pipe penetrations, instrument connections, and flange joints are sealed with flexible graphite gaskets or high-temperature silicone sealant to prevent moisture ingress at discontinuities.
  5. Final Quality Verification: A 100% visual inspection is conducted. Selected sections undergo a water-tightness test (spray test) to confirm jacket integrity. Records are documented per project QA/QC plan.

5. Applications

This insulation and waterproofing specification is applicable to stainless steel coil tube systems in the following sectors:

6. Quality Certifications

7. Unique Selling Points

Critical Design Note: Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is the single most destructive failure mechanism for stainless steel piping systems. The insulation layer is not merely a thermal component — it is a corrosion barrier. Any deviation from the Cl⁻ < 50 ppm requirement or any breach in jacket continuity can lead to catastrophic, undetectable pipe wall thinning and eventual rupture. Strict adherence to this specification is non-negotiable for asset integrity.
