Stainless Steel Coil Tube — Minimum Bend Radius Technical Specification

Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Coil Tube (Coil Tube) manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. is a cold-worked, continuous-length tubular product supplied in coiled form for downstream fabrication, installation, and maintenance applications. This specification focuses on the critical bending performance characteristics of the coil tube, specifically the minimum bend radius (Minimum Bend Radius), which governs the safe and reliable cold-forming capability of the product during field installation and secondary processing.

Bending is one of the most common secondary forming operations applied to stainless steel tubing during piping system installation. Exceeding the manufacturer's recommended minimum bend radius can result in catastrophic cross-sectional deformation, including unacceptable outer-wall thinning and inner-wall wrinkling, both of which compromise structural integrity, pressure containment, and service life.

Material & Properties

Stainless steel coil tubes are typically manufactured from austenitic grades such as AISI 304 (UNS S30400) and AISI 316 (UNS S31600), with occasional use of AISI 321 (UNS S32100) and AISI 316L (UNS S31603) for specialized corrosion-resistant or high-temperature applications.

The bending behavior of coil tubing is strongly dependent on the temper condition (Temper Condition) of the material, which reflects the degree of cold work imparted during the seamless tube manufacturing process:

The outer diameter (Outer Diameter, OD) of the tube is the primary dimensional parameter used to calculate the minimum bend radius. The relationship between temper condition and minimum bend radius follows the empirical formula:

Minimum Bend Radius = k × OD

where k is the bend radius factor determined by temper condition, as detailed below.

Manufacturing Process

The stainless steel coil tube is produced through a multi-stage manufacturing sequence:

  1. Hot Rolling (Hot Rolling): Billet or slab is hot-rolled into a hollow tube blank with initial wall thickness and diameter dimensions.
  2. Piercing (Piercing): A solid round billet is pierced to create the initial tube shell (in the case of seamless tubing).
  3. Cold Drawing / Cold Pilgering (Cold Drawing / Cold Pilgering): The tube is drawn through a die to achieve precise OD, wall thickness, and surface finish. The degree of cold work determines the final temper condition (soft, half-hard, or hard).
  4. Solution Annealing (Solution Annealing): For soft temper tubing, a controlled heat treatment at approximately 1050–1100 °C followed by rapid quenching restores full ductility and eliminates residual cold-work stresses.
  5. Pickling & Passivation (Pickling & Passivation): Acid cleaning removes oxide scale, followed by passivation to restore the protective chromium oxide film.
  6. Coiling (Coiling): The finished tube is wound into a coil for shipping and downstream processing convenience.

The temper condition is a direct function of the reduction ratio (Reduction Ratio) during cold drawing. Higher reduction ratios produce harder, stronger tubing with reduced ductility, while lower reduction ratios or subsequent annealing produce softer, more ductile tubing suitable for tighter bending radii.

Engineering Advisory Notes

Important: The minimum bend radius values specified herein (3×OD for soft temper, 5×OD for half-hard temper) are derived from the manufacturer's technical manual and represent the practical limits for cold bending without auxiliary support. Bending radii below these values will result in outer wall thinning exceeding the 10% allowable limit and/or inner wall wrinkling, both of which constitute non-conforming conditions per ASTM A213 and EN 10217-7. Hard temper tubing (30Y) should not be subjected to cold bending operations under any circumstances. For applications requiring radii below 3×OD, consider using a bending with internal mandrel (Bending with Internal Mandrel) process or selecting a specialized low-carbon, high-ductility grade. Always consult the manufacturer's current technical manual for the most up-to-date specifications before commencing any bending operation.
