EGR Cooler Seamless Coil Tube — 321/347 Stainless Steel
1. Product Overview
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Cooler Coil Tube is a specialized seamless stainless steel tube product engineered for use within automotive exhaust gas recirculation cooling systems. Manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd., this coil tube serves as the critical heat-exchange element in the EGR cooler assembly, where it is responsible for cooling recirculated exhaust gases from elevated temperatures back to a manageable range before reintroduction into the combustion chamber.
The EGR system is a fundamental emissions-control technology mandated under global regulatory frameworks (including Euro 6/7, China VI, and EPA Tier 4). By recirculating a controlled portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold, peak combustion temperatures are reduced, thereby suppressing nitrogen oxide (NOx) formation. The coil tube operates under an exceptionally harsh and multi-stress environment, simultaneously subjected to:
- Thermal exposure at temperatures ranging from 600 °C to 800 °C during transient and peak-load engine operation;
- Condensation acid corrosion caused by sulfuric acid (H2SO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and carbonic acid (H2CO3) formed when hot exhaust gases containing sulfur, chloride, and carbon dioxide condensate on cooler tube surfaces during low-temperature operation;
- Mechanical vibration and cyclic thermal fatigue induced by engine combustion pulses, road vibration, and thermal expansion/contraction cycles.
This product represents a state-of-the-art solution that addresses the triple-threat operating envelope — high-temperature oxidation, aggressive acid corrosion, and dynamic mechanical fatigue — through a synergistic combination of advanced alloy selection, precision manufacturing, and rigorous dual-validation testing.
2. Material Selection & Properties
2.1 Primary Alloy Grades
The EGR Cooler Coil Tube is fabricated exclusively from two austenitic stainless steel grades that have been specifically selected for their superior performance under the combined thermal-corrosive-mechanical stress regime of the EGR cooler environment:
SAE 321 (UNS S32100) — Titanium-Stabilized Austenitic Stainless Steel
- Key Alloying Element: Titanium (Ti) 0.50–1.00 wt%
- Stabilization Mechanism: Titanium preferentially forms titanium carbides (TiC), thereby scavenging free carbon and preventing chromium carbide (Cr23C6) precipitation at grain boundaries during sensitization temperatures (450–850 °C). This preserves intergranular corrosion resistance.
- Maximum Service Temperature: 870 °C (continuous), with acceptable short-term excursions to 900 °C
- Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to sulfuric acid (dilute to moderate concentrations), atmospheric corrosion, and thermal oxidation up to 800 °C
- Thermal Fatigue Performance: High thermal conductivity (~16.3 W/m·K) and low thermal expansion coefficient (17.2 × 10-6 /°C) minimize thermal stress gradients during rapid temperature transients
- Weldability: Excellent; suitable for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and orbital welding without preheating
SAE 347 (UNS S34700) — Niobium-Stabilized Austenitic Stainless Steel
- Key Alloying Element: Niobium (Nb) 0.40–1.00 wt%
- Stabilization Mechanism: Niobium forms niobium carbides (NbC), which are more stable than TiC at elevated temperatures, providing enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion and stress-rupture degradation at sustained temperatures above 800 °C
- Maximum Service Temperature: 925 °C (continuous), with acceptable short-term excursions to 950 °C
- Corrosion Resistance: Superior resistance to high-temperature sulfuric acid attack and thermal oxidation; maintains passive film integrity at temperatures where 321 may begin to show accelerated oxidation
- Mechanical Strength at Elevated Temperature: Higher creep resistance and stress-rupture life at 700–850 °C compared to 321
- Weldability: Excellent; weld metal retains full stabilization without need for post-weld solution treatment

- No martensitic transformation and associated volume expansion (unlike ferritic or duplex grades)
- Sustained ductility and toughness at elevated temperatures, preventing brittle fracture under cyclic thermal loading
- Non-magnetic behavior, compatible with electromagnetic sensing systems in the exhaust manifold

4. Manufacturing Process
4.1 Seamless Tube Production
The EGR Cooler Coil Tube is produced via a seamless manufacturing route to ensure homogeneous metallurgical structure, absence of weld-induced defects, and uniform wall thickness — all critical for withstanding cyclic thermal fatigue and resistive corrosion.
- Slab Preparation: Vacuum-arc remelted (VAR) or electro-slag remelted (ESR) ingots of 321 or 347 composition are cast and rolled into hot-rolling slabs. Ultra-low sulfur (S ≤ 0.02%) and ultra-low phosphorus (P ≤ 0.045%) chemistry is enforced to minimize inclusion-related crack initiation sites.
- Hot Rolling / Piercing: Slabs are reheated to 1150–1200 °C and pierced to produce seamless tube blanks (HIT — Hot Isostatically Extruded Tubes, or continuous tube mill route).
- Hot Finishing: Tubes are hot-finished to near-final dimensions and solution-annealed at 1050–1150 °C with rapid quenching to achieve a fully austenitic, stabilized microstructure.
- Cold Working (if applicable): For thinner-wall tubes (wall ≤ 1.0 mm), cold-drawing or cold-rolling is applied after hot finishing to achieve precise dimensional tolerances (±0.05 mm on OD, ±10% on wall).
- Final Annealing: Cold-worked tubes undergo a final solution-anneal at 1050–1100 °C followed by water quench to restore ductility and eliminate residual cold-work stresses.
- Acid Pickling & Passivation: Tubes are cleaned in a mixed acid bath (HNO₃/HF or HNO₃/H₂SO₄) to remove scale and oxide, followed by a nitric acid passivation step to restore the chromium-rich passive film (Cr₂O₃) on the surface.
4.2 Coil Forming & Bending
- Coil Straightening: Straightened and cut-to-length stock is fed into a CNC-controlled coil bending machine.
- Incremental Bending: The tube is bent to the specified coil geometry using incremental rotary draw bending (RDB) or mandrel-assisted bending to prevent wall thinning and ovalization. Minimum bend radius is enforced at ≥ 2.0 × OD (≥ 3.0 × OD recommended for fatigue-critical designs).
- Post-Bend Stress Relief: Bended coils may undergo a stress-relief anneal at 450–500 °C (below sensitization range) to eliminate residual bending stresses without compromising the stabilized microstructure.
- Welding (if required): End-to-end joints, if any, are welded using orbital TIG welding with 321/347 filler wire and argon shielding. Welds are radiographically inspected (RT) per ASME Section V, Article 2.
4.3 Quality Control During Production
- Chemical Analysis: Spectrographic verification of each heat lot for full chemical composition compliance.
- Mechanical Testing: Tensile, hardness (HV), and impact testing per ASTM A213/A269.
- Hydrostatic Testing: 100% of tubes hydro-tested at 2.5 × design pressure, hold time ≥ 5 seconds. <
