Hydrogen Electrolyzer Cooling Coil Tube — 316L / Titanium Alloy

1. Product Overview

This coil tube product is specifically engineered for the cooling and heat-exchange systems of hydrogen electrolyzer stacks, serving as a critical component within the power and energy sector's new energy infrastructure. The coil tube is designed to operate within electrolyte circulation loops handling both alkaline (KOH) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyte media at temperatures ranging from 60 °C to 90 °C, while simultaneously managing high-purity hydrogen gas streams. The product addresses the dual engineering challenges of alkaline corrosion resistance and hydrogen permeation barrier performance, making it indispensable for next-generation green hydrogen production facilities.

2. Material & Properties

The coil tube is manufactured from two primary material grades, selected based on the specific electrolyte environment and operational parameters:

Both material grades exhibit excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, maintaining yield strength and ductility within the 60–90 °C operating window while resisting long-term creep deformation under sustained pressure loading.

4. Manufacturing Process

The production of electrolyzer cooling coil tubes follows a rigorous multi-stage manufacturing sequence to ensure dimensional accuracy, metallurgical integrity, and long-term service reliability:

  1. Raw Material Selection: Certified mill sheets or seamless tubes conforming to ASTM A240/A269 (316L) or ASTM B265 (Titanium) are procured with full chemical and mechanical property traceability.
  2. Forming & Coiling: Tubes are cold-formed or hot-bent into precise coil geometries using CNC-controlled coiling equipment. For titanium grades, warm forming (250–350 °C) is employed to prevent work hardening and maintain ductility.
  3. Welding: All joints are fabricated using Automatic Orbital TIG Welding (AOTW) in a high-purity argon shielding atmosphere (O₂ ≤ 50 ppm, H₂O ≤ 20 ppm). Weld seams undergo 100% visual and dye penetrant inspection (DPI).
  4. Heat Treatment: Post-weld solution annealing at 1050–1150 °C followed by rapid water quenching eliminates residual stresses and restores full corrosion resistance of the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
  5. Surface Treatment: Electropolishing is applied to achieve a mirror finish (Ra ≤ 0.4 μm), reducing surface roughness that could promote localized corrosion or hydrogen adsorption sites.
  6. Passivation: Nitric acid or citric acid passivation removes free iron contamination and establishes a stable chromium oxide passive film.
  7. Final Testing: Hydrostatic pressure testing at 1.5× design pressure, dimensional verification via coordinate measuring machine (CMM), and optional hydrogen permeation testing per ASTM G513.
