Stainless Steel Coil Tube (Coiltube) — PREN-Based Corrosion Resistance Classification

Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Coil Tube (Coiltube) product line from Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd represents a premium category of continuous-length stainless steel tubing supplied in coiled form for high-volume downstream processing. This product is distinguished by its rigorous classification system based on the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), a widely recognized quantitative metric used to predict the resistance of stainless steels against localized corrosion, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion in aggressive environments.

The PREN index provides a single numerical value that allows engineers and procurement professionals to compare the corrosion resistance of different stainless steel grades on a standardized basis. By offering coiltubes across a spectrum of PREN values — from austenitic 304 to super-duplex 2507 — Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. delivers solutions tailored to increasingly demanding corrosion environments, from general industrial service to severe chloride-laden and high-temperature applications.

Understanding PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number)

The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number is calculated using the following empirical formula:

PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N

Where:

Corrosion Resistance Tiers

The PREN value serves as a direct indicator of a grade's ability to resist localized corrosion. Higher PREN values correspond to superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. offers the following representative grades:

Manufacturing Process

  1. Raw Material Selection & Ingot Casting: High-purity chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and nitrogen-bearing alloying elements are precisely blended and cast into ingots or continuously cast strips, ensuring controlled chemistry within tight specification limits.
  2. Hot Rolling: Ingot or strip material is hot-rolled to approximate dimensions at temperatures above the recrystallization point, establishing the initial microstructure and mechanical properties.
  3. Coil Annealing: The hot-rolled coil is annealed at controlled temperatures (typically 1,010–1,150°C for austenitic; 1,050–1,120°C for duplex) followed by rapid water quenching to dissolve carbides and restore full ductility and corrosion resistance.
  4. Pickling & Passivation: Chemical treatment removes oxide scale and forms a protective chromium oxide passive film, essential for achieving the PREN-predicted corrosion performance in service.
  5. Cold Drawing / Cold Forming: The annealed coil is cold-drawn through precision dies or cold-formed into tubular geometry, achieving final dimensional tolerances and enhancing mechanical properties through work hardening.
  6. Intermediate Annealing (if required): For multi-pass drawing, intermediate annealing cycles restore ductility between forming operations.
  7. Final Annealing & Passivation: A final solution treatment and passivation cycle ensures the as-delivered product meets full metallurgical and corrosion resistance specifications.
  8. Coiling & Packaging: The finished tubing is wound onto steel cores, wrapped in protective packaging (plastic film, moisture barrier), and secured for shipping.
  9. Quality Inspection: Every coil undergoes spectroscopic chemical analysis (OES), mechanical testing (tensile, hardness), hydrostatic or eddy current testing, and surface inspection before release.
